Symphony pays homage to Bernstein
St. John brought real intensity to the opening fugato of the "Phaedrus" movement.
The second movement ("Aristophanes") is all over the place in terms of compositional idiom, and St. John handled its zigs with aplomb. Her expert handling of the torrential third movement ("Erzimachus") brought out its intensity, while her final uninflected pitch on the subsequent "Agathon" was perfectly formed and in tune.
