If his recent triumph with the Tonhalle-Orchester in Zurich is anything to go by, then the veteran Polish conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski shows no signs of age slowing him down ! Skrowaczewski, who is also a celebrated and award-winning composer, conducted the Tonhalle in a programme which included Ligetis Cello Concerto and Bruckners second symphony. A champion of the works of Bruckner, Skrowaczewski is currently recording a Bruckner cycle on the Arte Nova label with the Saarlaendischer Rundfunk, where he is Principal Guest Conductor.
In his annual visit to the Hallé Orchestra he delivered what the Sunday Telegraph described as consistently satisfying music-making. Skrowaczewski has always been an outstanding Brucknerian and his interpretation of the Symphony No. 3 lacked nothing in grandeur while gaining what Bruckner is rarely allowed - a measure of charm. The playing of the brass and woodwind showed this orchestra at its best under a master musician.
In April he returns to the New York Philharmonic to conduct a programme of Beethoven, Webern and Schumann.
