At a glittering press launch in January, the Camerata Salzburg announced several new initiatives with which to take the prestigious ensemble (formerly the Camerata Accademica Salzburg) into the new Millennium. Greek virtuoso violinist Kavakos has been named as the first ever Principal Guest Artist of the Camerata Salzburg, beginning in September 2001. The position, created especially for Kavakos, aims at honouring the musical importance of Sandor Vegh, with whom both the violinist and the ensemble had close connections.
The role will see Kavakos as soloist and conductor with the Camerata both in Austria and on international tours. Repertoire will initially focus on the works of Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven as well as some Baroque works, and will eventually feature the string orchestrations of Bartok, Berg, and Stravinsky. Kavakos explorations will compliment the work being done by Sir Roger Norrington, who has recently renewed his contract as Prinicpal Conductor.
