Michael Torkes Rapture, a percussion concerto written for Colin Currie, had its world premiere in February with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop.
Torke hasnt sought to impress just by bashing lots of instruments very loudly. The first movement demands extreme virtuosity on wood and membrane instruments, the second needs tender water-drop delicacy on marimbas only, and the third adds funny, clinky things like wine- and beer-bottles to his kit. (Financial Times) The work is just one of a number of new commissions which are lined up for Currie: Steve Martlands concerto, commissioned by the the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington under Leonard Slatkin, will be followed by commissions by David Sawer and Joe Dudell.
Currie also made his Japanese and U.S. recital debuts this Winter, performing an exciting new solo programme featuring works by Reich, Xenakis, Norgard, Rosauro and a new commission by Dave Maric, Trilogy, for live and sampled percussion.
