The great Latvian cellist Mischa Maisky is celebrating the 250th Anniverary of Bachs death with over 100 concerts around the globe devoted to his cello suites and sonatas. He began the year with a marathon tour of the Far East, performing the six solo suites to packed houses in Japan, Korea, and at the Hong Kong Festival, where he also gave masterclasses to local students and played the Dvorak Concerto with the China National Symphony Orchestra. He has just re-recorded the solo suites for Deutsche Grammophon, following the huge success of his 1985 recording. His worldwide Bach activities also include a special event in Londons Queen Elizabeth Hall on 8 October when he will not only play all six solo suites but also all the cello and piano sonatas in one marathon concert spread throughout the day as part of the International Chamber Music Season.
