Percussionist Colin Curries career has been developing at an extremely rapid pace. Recent and forthcoming orchestral engagements include concertos with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre National du Capitole du Toulouse, BT Scottish Ensemble, Indianapolis Symphony, Utah Symphony, Colorado Symphony and at the Cabrillo (California) Festival. He has given more than 30 performances of James MacMillans Veni, Veni, Emmanuel (and recorded it with the Ulster Orchestra for Naxos), and will play this piece with the BBC Philharmonic at Manchesters Bridgewater Hall, with the composer conducting, in September 2000. Currie has also recently added Christopher Rouses concerto, Der gerettete Alberich, to his repertoire, and has already given five performances of this work.
In addition to recital appearances in the UK, Currie made his debut in Hong Kong last Autumn, and this Spring was featured at the Al Bustan International Festival of Music and the Arts in Lebanon as part of The Millenium: Rising Stars of the 21st Century. In 2000-2001 he will make his Japanese debut in Tokyo, as well as his first recitals in the U.S including Chicago. He will also collaborate with pianists Andreas Haefliger and Lars Vogt at the Klavierfest am Ruhr, and take part in violinist Viktoria Mullovas Through the Looking Glass project, which has been recorded for Philips and tours throughout the world.
Next season sees two important world premieres for Currie - Michael Torkes Percussion Concerto in February 2001 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Marin Alsop, and a new concerto by Steve Martland with the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, DC) and Leonard Slatkin, to be premiered at the Kennedy Center in May 2001.
