Mischa Maisky plays a recital as part of the South Bank Centres Rachmaninov Festival in May with his regular accompanist Daria Hovora. He includes in his programme the huge Rachmaninov Sonata, and also Maiskys own transcriptions of several Rachmaninov songs.
Maisky has had enormous success with his transcriptions of Schubert and Brahms Lieder in recital and on disc. In making his transcriptions, Maisky has obviously studied the art of singing lieder with commendable thoroughness. How marvellously he mirrors the qualities of the voice for his voice, that of the cello, is ever present. (Classic CD).
Looking further ahead, Maisky has further performances with his frequent collaborator Martha Argerich, and in 2000 will play Bachs complete works for cello all the solo suites as well as the cello/piano sonatas at the South Bank Centre, as part of a worldwide Bach project in the Bach anniversary year (in more than 30 cities).
