Richard Goode has long enjoyed an enthusiastic and loyal following from concertgoers and critics alike. His Nonesuch set of the complete Beethoven sonatas, along with the live performances of the cycle in Europe, were a milestone in his career on this side of the Atlantic and helped to bring him to wider recognition.
It was overdue, therefore, for him to be featured on the cover of Gramophone in March, in which his new solo Bach CD received rapturous praise and he was featured in an in-depth interview. The disc, of Partitas 2, 5 & 5, is Goode's first-ever recording of Bach, although it sounds as if he has been playing it forever.
"There is something strikingly courteous about Goode's approach, the courtesy of honest spontaneous expression tempered by textual fidelity and an impulse to underscore Bach's beauties without pedantry or vulgar highlighting of contrapuntal complexity... highly recommended." (Gramophone)
