Very Short Biography

One of Britain's leading conductors, Richard Hickox is Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He founded the City of London Sinfonia in 1971 and is its Music Director. He is also Associate Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Emeritus of the Northern Sinfonia and co-founder of Collegium Musicum 90, and has conducted many times at English National Opera and at Covent Garden. Forthcoming guest engagements abroad will include the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Dutch Radio Philharmonic and Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Washington Opera and Vienna State Opera.

Richard Hickox is under exclusive contract to Chandos Records, for whom he has recorded over 250 discs. Winner of Gramophone Record of the Year and Best Orchestral disc in 2001 for his Vaughan Williams 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra, he has also won three further Gramophone Awards, a Grammy (for Peter Grimes), the Association of British Orchestras Award for services to British Music, the Sir Charles Groves Prize and the Royal Philharmonic Society Award, and is an Honorary Fellow of Queen’s College Cambridge and the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama. He was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Honours List.
