Christopher Pfund, tenor... |
b i o g r a p h y...........back to roster....up January 2012 Universally recognized for his irreverent portrayals of the Roasting Swan in Carmina Burana, tenor Christopher Pfund has made the role a pillar of his career, performing it with countless major orchestras in North America. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel admired his "rounded vocal beauty" and The New York Times called his voice an "attractive tenor [that] helps define a sympathetic character." While best known for his oratorio work with orchestra, Pfund has also enjoyed success on the opera stage, including Glimmerglass Opera (Bardolfo in Falstaff), New York City Opera (Emilio in Handels Partenope) and Florentine Opera as Pong in Turandot, to name a few. Among Pfunds concerts in 2011/12 figure return engagements with the Indianapolis Symphony and Nashville Symphony, both in Carmina Burana, as well as a Messiah with the Peniel Concert Choir. His 2009/10 season featured Carmina Buranas with the Cleveland Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony and Brazils Philharmonic of Minais Gerais (the latter two with Fabio Mechetti as conductor). The 2008/09 season brought his debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony under Manfred Honeck in Carmina Burana, a repeat of the work with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Reading Symphony followed, as well as a performance of Messiah with the Rochester Philharmonic, and another portrayal of Pong, this time with the Jacksonville Symphony. 2007/08 was one of Pfunds biggest seasons, performing Carmina Burana with the Philadelphia Orchestra (Philadelphia, Vail, CO and Saratoga, NY), Colorado Symphony, Houston Symphony, Florida Orchestra and at the International Festival Cesky Krumlov with the Prague Radio Symphony in addition to Haydns Creation with the Louisiana Philharmonic. Previous seasons saw him collaborate repeatedly with the orchestras of Spokane, Hartford, Alabama, Memphis, Pacific, San Diego, Colorado, Jacksonville, and Monterey, all for Carmina Burana. Another one of his signature pieces, Handels Messiah was performed with the Buffalo and Virginia symphonies under JoAnn Falletta as well as the Syracuse Symphony and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. He also worked with Gerard Schwarz in Kurt Weills Eternal Road under the auspices of the Milken Family Foundation. On the operatic side he has portrayed Sempronio in Haydns Lo Speziale with the Orchestra of St. Lukes, Pong in Puccinis Turandot with El Paso Opera, New Jersey State Opera, and the Florentine Opera, Tonik in Smetanas The Two Widows with the Chautauqua Opera and the New York City premiere of Ernst Kreneks Vertrauenssache with Elysium between Two Continents. Pfund has recorded the title role in Brittens Albert Herring on the Vox label and Distant Playing Fields: Vocal Music of Amy Beach and William Maye on Newport Classics. A Colorado native, Christopher Pfund holds degrees from both the University of Northern Colorado and Manhattan School of Music. He was an opera apprentice with the Santa Fe, Glimmerglass and Chautauqua operas, and was a 20th Century Song Recitalist at the Banff Centre.
