June 2012

First discovered by the late Sir Georg Solti, New York born conductor Stephen D'Agostino has since made a mark in Europe as a conductor to watch. In 2008 he became the first American to be appointed Artistic Director/Principal Conductor of the Hungarian Radio Orchestra.

In 1995, at the invitation of Solti, he became his assistant for two extensive tours across Europe with the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

After his arrival in Budapest, D'Agostino has become a sought after guest conductor in Europe, appearing with such orchestras as the Hofer Symphoniker, Iasi State Philharmonic "Moldova", Erno Dohnanyi Symphony, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra, Hungarian State Orchestra, Hungarian Radio Orchestra, Weiner-Szasz Chamber Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Györ, Szeged and Tirgu Mures. He held the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Duna Symphony Orchestra from 1996 - 1999 and was named Principal Conductor of the Tatabánya Symphony Orchestra in 2005. Following his successful conducting debut at the Hungarian State Opera he has been invited to perform there on a regular basis.

In the United States, Stephen D’Agostino has conducted the Jacksonville Symphony, Buck’s County Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Ballet of Williamsburg and the Astral Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. In the summer 2009 he led the Naumburg Orchestra during the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts’ 104th season at Central Park, New York, and later made his debut with the Green Bay Symphony. In 2011 he debuted with I Musici de Montréal.

D'Agostino studied at the Manhattan School of Music during which time he served as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Manhattan Concerto Orchestra for three seasons. Upon completion of his studies in 1993 he won a prestigious United States Fulbright Grant, which led him to Europe, specifically Hungary, to continue his studies.

A year later, D'Agostino returned to New York to conduct the opening concert of the Washington Square Park Music Festival. That same summer he was awarded the Leonard Bernstein Fellowship at Tanglewood where he participated in master classes with Lorin Maazel, Bernard Haitink, Seiji Ozawa and Gustav Meier.
